Things to do in Santa Ynez Valley

The Santa Ynez Valley is an inland wine region behind Santa Barbara, not a coastal stop you pass on the way there. From the coast, the valley is reached by a winding mountain road (San Marcos Pass or Highway 154), which adds a further stretch of driving on top of the roughly two-hour run from Los Angeles to Santa Barbara.

Away from the marine air, the valley runs noticeably hotter and drier, with summer afternoons commonly in the low-to-mid 30s Celsius (high 80s to 90s Fahrenheit) even when the coast stays mild.

Wineries and tasting rooms mostly work by reservation, with opening hours that vary by property, and there is no practical public transport between them, so a rental car is the realistic way to get around.
