Things to do in Malibu

Malibu is the coastal stretch north of Santa Monica along the Pacific Coast Highway, running for roughly 20 miles of shoreline rather than sitting around one walkable centre. Beaches here lean wilder and more residential than Santa Monica or Venice, with Zuma and El Matador among the better-known stops.

A car is essential: there is no Metro rail line into Malibu, and the drive from Downtown LA or Hollywood typically takes 45 minutes to over an hour depending on PCH traffic, which is occasionally shut for landslides or wildfires.

Most beaches are public despite private homes lining the road, but access points and parking differ from one beach to the next, so check conditions before setting out.
