Things to do in Long Beach
Long Beach sits at the southern edge of the region, built around a working port rather than a resort strip, and it reads differently from the beach towns further north. It is one of the few coastal areas reachable without a car: the Metro A Line runs directly from Downtown LA, a trip of roughly 30-45 minutes outside peak traffic.
Downtown Long Beach is also where ferries to Catalina Island depart, with a crossing of around one hour. The city mixes active port and industrial zones, ordinary residential neighbourhoods and a downtown core that is still mid-renewal, alongside waterfront draws such as the aquarium.
It is not a uniformly polished tourist strip, and visitors expecting one should adjust expectations before arriving.
