Things to do in San Luis Obispo

San Luis Obispo sits on Highway 101 roughly halfway up the Central Coast, several hours' drive north of Los Angeles toward San Francisco, and works best as a stop on a Central Coast road trip rather than a day trip from LA.

The appeal is inland, not coastal: a walkable, low-rise downtown built around brunch cafes and a Thursday farmers' market, and the Edna Valley vineyards a short drive south, where harvest runs through late summer and early autumn. Wine tastings and the area's side-car tours have limited capacity and are worth booking ahead rather than turning up on spec.

A nature outing into the Santa Lucia foothills by Hummer covers hiking trails and hilly ranch terrain, not sand, so pack for a trail, not a beach.
